Working With Men and Women Who Have Suffered Sexual Abuse - Two Day Course:

As the prevalence of disclosure of sexual abuse is increasing (particularly with regards to men) and more people are coming forward for help and support, we feel this is an important course which is designed to help and assist those professionals who may come into contact or work directly with adult survivors of sexual abuse. The course will provide insight and understanding of the issues surrounding the subject along with opportunities to explore and develop strategies for working with this client group.

This 2 day course is part experiential, part educational and part exercise based. The course will provide information on the prevalence and the impact of sexual abuse on children and adults. By using examples of best practise the course examines the nature of the support which can be offered to clients. Through experiential learning participants will gain insight into the psychological and emotional impact of a client's sexual abuse. Due to the sensitivity of the subject matter a plenary session will be held at the end of each day which provides an opportunity for debrief.

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Have an understanding of the impact of sexual abuse on individuals.
  • Have an understanding of the pre-determining factors such as familial and cultural influences.
  • Have an understanding of the links between sexual and other forms of abuse.
  • Have an understanding of the of the different effect of sexual abuse on men and women.
  • Explore and have an understanding of the various associated diagnostic factors.
  • Have an awareness of how to 'contain' and manage disclosure.
  • Explore the potential impact on professionals.
  • Understand the need for and how to access support via supervision.
  • Explore the therapeutic process, various therapeutic options, and models of treatment.
  • Develop more confidence in responding to disclosure of sexual abuse.
  • Feel more confident with this client group and responding to their needs.
